I am back again for the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge so have made the commitment to blog every day in April except the Sundays. Some bloggers choose a Theme, and others do random posts. For me, a theme works better, so the theme I’ve chosen for 2016 Bendigo. I live just outside Bendigo and have been in this area for only 9 years, so feel I still have ‘visitors eyes’.
The Alexandra Fountain can be found right in the centre of Bendigo at the busiest and most central intersection in town known as Charing Cross. It’s impossible to visit Bendigo and not see this beautiful, fountain.
The fountain was funded by a 500 pound gift from George Lansell, and 700 pounds from the Sandhurst Council. Architect W. Vahland, who built many historic buildings in Bendigo, designed the fountain.
The fountain was named after the Princess of Wales, Princess Alexandra. Her two sons, Prince Albert and Prince George attended the opening of the fountain in 1881.
The design of the fountain is very elaborate and ornate and it is surrounded by a moat of water which is bordered with a decorative cast iron fence.
Historically the Alexander Fountain is a monument to the success of the Goldrush in Bendigo.
