Epic Hikes & Treks: Burke and Wills Trail

May 7, 2016 By nextphaseinfitness Leave a Comment

Even though the Camino was almost two years ago, I still can’t seem to shake off the restlessness. Lately, again, I’ve been thinking about what exercise challenge is next for me, so I’ve been googling and generally, just looking around. I’ve come up with a couple of things that call to me and have me dreaming. I’m not sure that I will ever do some of these epic hikes or treks but they will be on my bucket list.  I’m also open to options closer to home this time.

Burke and Wills Route

Even though the Camino was almost two years ago, I still can’t seem to shake off the restlessness. Lately, again, I’ve been thinking about what exercise challenge is next for me, so I’ve been googling and generally, just looking around. I’ve come up with a couple of things that I’d like to do. Not sure that I will be able to, but they are things that I’d like to do. I’m also open to options closer to home.

I’d love to walk the route that the Burke and Wills expedition walked, from Melbourne, Victoria, to Flinders River in Far North Queensland. This is a distance of about 3250 kilometres. Now, I do realise it wouldn’t be possible to do it all at once. But I wouldn’t mind doing it section by section over the next few years. I’ve always been a bit obsessed with the stories of Burke and Wills, so other than doing it for a fitness challenge, I’d also like to say that I walked in Burke and Wills footsteps.

I need to do a bit more indepth research for this. I’m not sure whether there is a designated trail that goes the entire way. But I think not. I think there are trails in some sections, that don’t actually join up. It would be impossible to follow their footsteps exactly, as there are gaps in their diaries where they recorded details of their ill-fated trip. But I’d be happy to do my own fairly close version, in the places where there are gaps

This is the first of a series of posts about the challenges that are out there for me to consider. Also for you to consider. Let me know in the comments if the Burke and Wills Route sounds like something you would like to do. Also please let me know of anything in your area that you think I might be interested in.
