Regular readers may have noticed that recently my posts have been more infrequent than usual. Your first thought may be that perhaps I’m getting tired of blogging. I’m here to tell you that nothing could be further from the truth. Over the years, blogging has almost become my purpose in life. I do love it and think constantly about blogging and how I can make improvements to my blog. Blog ideas are popping into my head constantly which I add to my list of future post ideas.
So why the irregular posts lately? It’s very simple really. Life has been getting in the way of my blogging. As much as I’d love to publish two or three posts each week, lately I’m lucky to find time to publish one single one line post.
- My little retirement job has become almost full time, and at times, more than full time. I drive almost an hour two and from work so that means more time away from home. At my stage in life, I’m not working just for the money. Of course, the money is very nice. But more important to me is enjoyment. I truly love my job, and am not ready to give it up and retire just yet.
- Days off work have been spent in the garden, now spring has finally arrived. Because of my work hours, I spent very little time in the garden over winter. I really believe that time spent in the garden in winter, means a more happier time gardening in spring. It gives a head start to all those spring garden chores that seem to be waiting for attention at the end of a long, cold winter. As I didn’t follow my own advice this year, I’m now paying the price, with an overwhelming number of jobs to be done and limited time to do them. The joys of a large country garden!
- My fitness routine is also extremely time consuming. In an ideal week, I schedule one gym session and one cardio session every week day. The cardio session could be a one hour spin class or it could be a 2 hour bush walk or bike ride. It also could be a much longer session. I do try not to miss any of these sessions, though at times it’s unavoidable.
- And then there are just the general chores and bits and pieces of daily life that need to be done. I find that I’m squeezing them into an ever shortening time frame,
All of the time spent on the above, is time that is taking me away from blogging. It’s recently become out of control, and I have been feeling I need to reassess what is important to me. These things taking up my time are extremely important to me, and I definitely want to continue with them. But so is blogging. I couldn’t imagine a time without blogging. Having three blogs, of course, is probably not the best way to simplify my time management, but I do love all three of my blogs, and couldn’t imagine a life without any one of them.
Over the past week, I’ve devoted a little time to looking at all that I want to keep in my life, and setting up a time management plan. This plan will mean that I do all these tasks intentionally and am completely present to each task as I’m doing them. Usually, as I’m working on one thing, my mind is racing ahead to the next thing on the list. I’ve long held the belief that there is always time to do a thing that you really want to do. If it’s important to you, then you will find the time to squeeze it in somewhere in a busy schedule. Blogging is one of those things that are important to me, so I intend to do whatever it takes to be able to fit it in to a busy life.
With that in mind, I have come up with a plan. It’s just a small plan, but I think it will solve my problem. Every Sunday night, my routine is to schedule my work hours, gym and cardio sessions into my calendar. From today, I have also scheduled blogging time into my calendar to ensure that the weeks without blogging regularly, no longer get away from me.
This post isn’t meant to be a post of excuses or a ‘woe is me, I have a busy life’ type of post. I thought it was time that I give a heads up on what’s been happening in my life, and the challenges that have been occurring. I really appreciate that people choose to read my blogs. One of the things I love to do is read other blogs and make comments. I’m guilty of not doing as much of this lately as I’d like, but I couldn’t stay away for long. One of the joys of blogging to me, is reading other blogs and joining in their conversation.
Today, as I was about to complete the final draft of this post, and hit publish, I came across a guest post that one of my blogger friends, Sam from Loving the Fifty Something had written on Hugh’s blog, Hugh’s Views & News. Sam wrote about why she almost gave up blogging. Here is the link to Sam’s Guest Post While you’re there check out more of Sam’s adventures in life and living on a canal barge in Yorkshire, UK.
Do you understand the struggle for time? Do you have any time management tricks? I’d love to hear your thoughts and promise to reply to all comments left.
