Today I’ve been thinking about goals, and cycling goals in particular. I need to get out there pedalling and quickly. This winter, the coldest I can ever remember, has seen me get very lazy. For me the best way to make sure I stay accountable and don’t cancel training sessions is to set some goals. Following are a few of many cycling events in Victoria over the next few months.
National Ride2Work Day is on October 14, 2015. This is the largest cycling event in Australia, and is held every year in October. Registrations are now open here . Of course you can ride to work without registering, but there is a bike being given away to one lucky registered participant. I live 20k out of town so looking forward to an early start for 40k ride round trip on the day
Around the Bay, Victoria’s iconic cycling event is on October 11 2015. There is a choice of distances – 20k, 50k, 100k, 135k, 210k, 250k, with varying routes, but all around the bay of Melbourne.
RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride starts on 28 November 2015 and finishes on 6 December 2015. This year the ride starts in Ballarat, with over a week of cycling around Central Victoria and finishing in Bendigo for a distance of 540k.
Fruit Loop Ride, on September 13, 2015, starts in Shepparton, cycling around the Goulburn Valley, distances of either 50k, 115k, or 180k.
Benalla’s Better Bike Hike , on October 18, 2015 starts in Benalla, riding routes around the north eastern Victorian countryside. Distances are 26k, 60k, and 125k
October is the Great Cycle Challenge. This is a personal cycling challenge and also a fundraiser for kids cancer. Set a distance that you think you can ride in a month and also set your fundraising target. There is an app which measures distance ridden, or it can be taken from other measuring apps such as MapMyRide and Strava. After entry has been submitted, you can access your own page to see stats during the month.
These are just a few of the rides that are on the calendar from now until the end of the year. I won’t be participating in all of them, but will definitely be on the start line for Ride to Work Day, Round The Bay and the Great Cycle Challenge.
