Day 13 Burgos to Hornillos del Camino

June 13, 2014 By nextphaseinfitness Leave a Comment

We left Burgos at 5am with no time pressures as we had booked a private albergue at Hornillos de Camino, our overnight stop. As is usual in the big cities, it was a little bit tricky to find the way out as the way markers were very limited.
Today’s walk was probably the easiest so far. 21k, mostly flat bit with a bit of a climb from 14 to 17k, followed by a very steep descent.
Hornillus is exactly what we need to recharge the batteries, after a busy time sightseeing in Burgos. Very, very quiet here with one small shop selling a few groceries and one bar/cafe. Otherwise it looks like a ghost town really. Or a set from a John Wayne Western

Today at about the 15k mark, we started crossing The Meseta. This is the Central Spanish tableland between Burgos and Astorga. It is slightly dreaded among pilgrims, as being very open and flat, very hot. It sounds to me like the challenge with the Meseta is mental rather than physical. It is very famous for messing with pilgrims’ heads.
I hear some pilgrims talking about taking the bus to miss bits of The Meseta. I am hoping that I can manage all of it on foot.
