Eat Healthy for Life Challenge Day 2/7

April 21, 2020 By nextphaseinfitness 12 Comments

Today is Day 2 of Sue’s 7 Day Eat Healthy for Life  challenge at her blog Sizzling Towards Sixty. This program is just a short reboot to kick off healthy eating habits for life. Most importantly, this is not a diet. Rather, it is a short one week plan to kick start healthy habits for life

Day 2

Sue’s video today focused on mindset. Her guest was Peta from Strong Healthy Women who had much to contribute to the discussion.

Mindset and mindfulness around food has been my weakness forever, but usually I’m aware of it and can keep it in check. Lately, however, while self isolating, mindfulness  has not even been a consideration,  as I reach for foods I normally don’t eat, or usually would only eat as sometimes foods. Over the past few weeks these sometimes foods have become everyday foods, so the information in this video came at the perfect time.

Sue and Peta discussed the connection between food, mindful eating, emotional eating and how to deal with cravings. For me, cravings are usually sugary, sweet treats that I can succumb to if there isn’t a healthy alternative. I’ve found over the years, that the best way to avoid sugary cravings is to make sure I don’t skip meals and to include a protein at each meal.

The challenge given for today is to think become mindful when eating. Think about what we are about to eat. To recognise our mindset, recognise if we are hungry and be aware of what is triggering the urge to eat. Could it be hunger or emotion?

The video today and the information from Sue and Peta came at a perfect time for me. I included my thoughts into my journal, which gave me some clarity around food and my relationship with it.

Roasted Vegetable and Hummus Tartine

I came across this recipe on Pinterest.  I’m keen to try it, as it looks so tasty.  Because I’m committed to keeping to the copyright laws, I haven’t included the recipe here but there is a link below to Diala’s Kitchen blog where you will find the full recipe

Hi Jen, I’m so pleased you found the information provided about Food& Mood not only interesting but also timely. I know many of us have fallen a little off track during isolation. I also think that keeping a food diary that includes how you are feeling when you eat and examining why you are eating is a way to connect your mind to food. Another lovely recipe to try so thanks for sharing. xx

Hi Jennifer – I’m so glad you’re enjoying Sue’s series. I think mindfulness and eating is something we all need to be aware of, especially while we’re home so much (and close to the fridge and pantry!) I often find myself reaching for a snack when I’m not hungry and have to remind myself about the empty calories.
Thanks for linking up with us at MLSTL and I’ve shared on my SM 😊

I can so relate to what you’re saying Jennifer and I also enjoyed the video chat. I’m now pausing before I reach for something and am trying to be more mindful. I enjoyed your post for #mlstl

I’m doing the challenge too Jennifer. I used to keep a food log, but haven’t for quite some time, so it’s been enlightening not only to list what I eat, but how I’m feeling and what’s prompting me to eat. Here’s to a healthy reboot for both of us!

I’m also finding going back to a food diary is helpful. Do stay safe Christie

Hi Jennifer, I can relate to the mindless eating and reaching for the sugary treat, especially right now as I shelter at home. I have gotten away from my food diary and it’s always helpful to me when I keep track, so I’ll be pulling that out today. I agree that Sue’s 7-day challenge comes at a perfect time and sounds like it is full of helpful and practical resources. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for visiting and for your comment. I don’t keep a food diary all the time but like to get back to it regularly to check in with myself
