The Grapest 5k run was on in Bendigo on Saturday 11 February. My friends Helen and Yvonne, and I formed a team, and had been looking forward to it, and training for it, since late last year.
The Grapest run is a series of winery runs, with Bendigo being the first. The venue was a winery, just outside Bendigo. We entered for the 5k run and the 1k wine walk, which was a series of wine tasting tables to be walked immediately after crossing the finish line.
As the day loomed, the weather was dreadful, with extremely high temperatures, in the week leading up to the event, and over 40 degrees on the day before. The run was at 5pm so we were a little concerned about running in the heat, but planned to enjoy it anyway.
But all turned out to be ok, as the weather cooled slightly, just before the event started. The run was still hot, but not unbearable, as we crossed the start line, and headed uphill, into the bush trails behind the winery. It was a tough, hilly run in hot weather.
I love trail running so enjoyed the route very much, even though care had to be taken over rocks and uneven ground.
We enjoyed the wine tasting immensely. It was such a great way to finish off a run. There was a party atmosphere with food available and a great band and dancing.
After the wine-walk, we sat under a tree and relaxed, eating our dinner and catching up with friends. What more could any ‘fun-runner’ want, after a fabulous run.
This was the first fun run I had done for a couple of years, as I had promised myself to never do another. But this run has ignited my interest again. I will definitely be back to run Grapest in 2018. My intention is to keep the running training up and perhaps there will be other fun runs on the horizon also.
I read this on the event website. The quote describes the spirit of the event very well:
Stay as the sun sets… play, take a tour, kick back, have a blast with our live band
You’ve never run a race quiet like this one! The latest crazy thing to hit Australia is a 5km sunset run, followed by a 1km wine tasting walk which would suit the non runners as well.
It is just long enough to get the heart rate up if that’s your thing, short enough to suit the more laid-back adventurer, and just right for EVERYONE! Whether you’re a running enthusiast, a lover of fine wines, or just love a great night out, the Grapest 5k Run is a race like no other. Whatever you prefer, you will never have another experience like the Grapest 5k Run! And THEN let’s party!
