For me, spring is all about the irises. They started flowering, almost from the first day of spring, and are still blooming. The big lockdown project of 2020 was to make new iris beds, so, many of my irises have only been planted recently. There are 69 different colours of iris in the garden, but I don’t expect most of the younger plants to flower this year. I’ve had fun during October posting up one iris photo on Instagram each day. Sue from Women Over 50 Living Well is having a photo challenge #bringmorecolourintoyourlife on Instagram and I’ve been joining her with my colourful irises. Below are just a few of my October iris photos.
“Scratching Around in Dirt Seems To Make Me Happy”
What I’ve Been watching
- Restoration Australia. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve become slightly addicted to Restoration Australia on ABCTV . As well as watching the current season, I’m catching up on previous seasons. In my old life, I loved interior decoration, and it was a big part of my life. These days, I’ve moved on from that, but this show is bringing back memories to me of a huge restoration of a California Bungalow that we did in the 1980s. At the time, we were living on our country property and were looking to find a house in town as our children were then late teenagers and spending more time in town. We found an old house that had been condemned by the council that I described as ‘beautiful’ much to the shock of the family. We renovated the house in a short time and it became a talking point in town, as the old ‘haunted’ house had been a talking point.
- Fires on ABCTV: I’ve loved this six part drama which was based on the Australian bush fires of 2019/20. Fires is inspired by actual people who were caught up in the fires. By the end of every episode I was left in tears. This show was really heartbreaking but also inspirational.
Elvis is coming to Bendigo, or at least the Elvis Exhibition is coming. As soon as I heard the news, I booked our tickets. The Elvis Exhibition brings memorabilia from Elvis’ Graceland, in Memphis, to Bendigo. I’ve been to Memphis and Graceland twice and couldn’t get enough of Graceland. I’m not a fanatical Elvis fan, but I do appreciate his talent and his music. The Elvis Exhibition comes to Bendigo, in March 2022, so there is a little while to wait. I can’t see us getting out and about before then, due to Covid, so Elvis could be our ‘coming out’ event. Elvis is the first huge event at the Art Gallery, since Covid struck. The Bendigo Art Gallery has become known for it’s International shows, so expectations are huge for Elvis.
At 6pm last friday, all restrictions were lifted. This means that Melbourne people can visit regional areas again. There are about many cases of Covid in the community, at the moment, with new daily cases of over 1000. I find it quite terrifying to have the restrictions lifted, though I do understand that we can’t be in lockdown forever. The vaccination rate for Victoria is now very high, which is why the government has decided to lift restrictions. I have decided to keep the restrictions in my life, and except for work, will be lying low for a while longer, to keep safe.
One bonus of states lifting restrictions and borders, is that when Queensland borders are lifted, I will get to see my son and grandsons. I’m not expecting this to happen until 2022.
I’ve added Get fit with Rick classes from YouTube, to my exercise program, mainly to try something different, and shake things up a bit. Bloggers Jo from And Anyways and Sammie from The Annoyed Thyroid told me about Rick, and I checked him out immediately. As soon as I saw his walking workouts, I knew I’d enjoy them. I’ve been doing Rick’s classes at least four times each week and am loving them.
As usual there’s been lots of bush walking and last weekend I did my first walk on The O’Keefe Rail Trail, since lockdown ended. It felt so good to be back.
Strength Training in my home gym has continued as usual.
A few bike rides, but the wet weather and muddy trails have meant I haven’t been able to ride as much as I would like. Hoping for a drier November so I can get the wheels well and truly turning.
How was October for you? I’d love to hear about your highlight.
