This is my monthly wrap up of things that made me smile during the month of May. Earlier in the year I made a commitment to myself to make a concerted effort to think about the great and positive things in my life, and in particular, those things that make me smile. These days, most of the things that make me smile are the simple, every day things that many would consider to be unremarkable. No longer do I need big things or big events in my life, to make me happy.
When I decided to write monthly, about the happy moments during the month, I had no idea that Covid-19 was about to appear in our lives, causing life, as we know it, to change. I’m sure most would say that the past few months have been quite stressful and worrying. But this post isn’t to dwell on those worries. During the month I’ve been taking note of things around me they make me smile.
Other than worries about the pandemic, I’ve found lots to smile about and many small highlights during May. Due to self isolation, I’m still staying close to home, which is the reason for the highlights being small.
Life in isolation has forced me to slow down, and take a look around me. For a change I have time to appreciate my life and realise that there is so much positivity and much to smile about.
- Living life in the slow lane with no need to rush made me smile every day
- The vegie garden is now fully planted with lots of heathy winter greens. I’ve been harvesting peas and the snow peas are almost ready.
- Sunshine after rain. There has been much more rain than usual which is great
- Gym sessions in my home gym. My gym sessions have been much more relaxed while in isolation as there has been no need to rush.
- Raking huge amounts of mulch from under trees on our property to put on the garden
- New walking paths through bushland on our property after they were cleared by rain.
- Ducks visited our dam. We don’t usually see them until spring
- Time to spend on genealogy
- One night during May, I slept for 6 hours, for the first time in years
- Took a road trip to a nearby town to walk along their beautiful river walk on a foggy morning.
- Coffee from favourite nearby bakery. Takeaway, but still a lovely treat
- Molly is 16 now and at times is a cranky old lady. This face when told it’s time for bed!
- Lots of laughs over Covid-19 memes that pop up on social media

Hi Jen – I love that there’s always something to smile about if we look for it. It’s the small and simple things that really count and being grateful for them helps us to remember how truly blessed we are to live in Australia, to have been so under-impacted by the virus (and the race riots), and to be allowed to just be happy in our own little space. I’m grateful for it every day.
Oh foggy mornings are so pretty. They’re rare where I live but I do like them when I get to see them.
Lovely to read of what has made you smile Jennifer and I can feel the relaxation in your words. Life is a bit slower for many of us at the moment, and that’s not such a bad things is it? #lifethisweek
Living the slow life has suited me well too. I have learned to count my blessings and not take anything for granted anymore.
Your home gym is impressive! It’s nice that you can take your time with your workouts.
Hi Laure I’m honestly not sure how I’m ever going to get back in the fast lane after again
Lots of positive things when we just take a few moments to look for and acknowledge them. I was just thinking this weekend that I should write about some of the things that have made me smile lately. Great minds!!
I make the same face your pup does only mine is when I get up. I am all smiles when it is time to go to bed.
What a home gym! Most impressive. Ours in a spot in front of the coffee table where we stretch out our yoga mats, lay our dumbbells and put on our favorite YouTube workouts.
We do a sentence a day post which goes live the first Tuesday of each month with sentences written each day the month prior. Just shared our sentences for May. You might like to link up with us from my blog. And maybe write sentences for June? This post is kind of along the same lines.
Hi Leslie I love the sound of sentence a day. I’ll check it out
Like the sleeping for 6 hours in May. Interesting isn’t it when we need to find things for posts like these…we can but it takes a bit more work thanks to a pandemic. It is a bit like me choosing gratitude. I really need to look for it .
Thank you for linking up this week. I have changed my blog’s home page; right hand-side, to note the regular bloggers and blog names who link up for Life This Week. I am very grateful that you are one of those. See you next week when the optional prompt is Kindness. Take care, Denyse.
Thanks for your comments Denyse and for letting me know about the change to your site
Your home gym looks fab! If I had a set up like that, I probably wouldn’t need to go to the gym {though who am I kidding – I love the gym atmosphere!} I think it’s the little things that keep us content and grateful so it’s nice to be able to look back at those. Hope this month is just as amazing!
Thanks Sanch. I have to admit that sometimes having a home gym makes it easy for me to cop out on a workout. Nobody knows but me.
