Time to invoke Plan B

May 15, 2019 By nextphaseinfitness 13 Comments

What’s happened?

Ten days ago, I tripped and fell flat on my face. I jumped up very quickly, feeling thankful that there was no injury. Or so I thought! It wasn’t long before I started to feel a little soreness around the ribs but didn’t take much notice, until that soreness became pain.

So, today, having a day off from work, I took myself off to the doctor who quickly sent me for an xray. The xray showed I had broken ribs! News I wasn’t happy to hear. So all my carefully made and documented plans for the next 12 weeks have now flown out the window.

Plan A

Plan A was my Plan for the next 12 weeks concerning my participation in
Maxine’s Challenge. The second round for 2019 is about to start in a few days and we are now in the middle of prep week which means doing all that needs to be done to prepare for the start of the challenge, and to make life easier during the challenge. I’ve been busy doing food prep, exercise prep and mindset prep. A large focus of prep week has been generally planning all exercises for the next 12 weeks.

And then along comes the broken ribs to send the plans awry.

Plan B

As I’m now not able to follow the complete exercise plan, I’ve had to make a Plan B. I’m not able to do upper body work with weights, rowing or cycling. The Maxine’s Exercise plan is based around strength work so there’s a huge challenge to be met there with broken ribs. I was also planning to add in rowing and cycling goals along with my usual walking goals.

Plan B consists of leg work in the gym as that’s ok for me. I’ve had to scrub out the rowing and cycling goals for now, but will come back to them later in the year. Walking is ok, so that will now be the major focus for the next six weeks. Increasing distance will be the aim and not increasing speed as I had planned. Fast walking isn’t a good idea just now.

Injuries are devastating, but I believe they happen for a reason and there is always a Plan B. I’m not sure of the reason for the broken ribs yet, but it is very likely to show itself over the next few weeks. I’ve spent a bit of time feeling sorry for myself but am now over the disappointment and devastation and have decided that it’s time to move on with Plan B and make the best of it without looking behind me. Plan B also consists of perfect, clean nutrition. As I won’t be able to exercise as much as usual, or as much as I should, according to Maxine’s Challenge, nutrition will be the key to success in the next 12 weeks. So the Maxine’s Nutrition Plan will be my best friend for the next six weeks and beyond.

Eat, Salad, Cucumbers, Food, Tomatoes

While I was having my x-ray, the radiologist said to me “Oh you had a fall” I was so tempted to say “No, I fell over“. This is the first time I’ve ever been asked that question, and I was offended by it. What do you think? At what age do you ‘have a fall’? I’m sure that wouldn’t have been said to a younger person. Perhaps, I’m being too sensitive. I’d love to hear what you think about this. I promise to reply to all comments.

Oh dear Jennifer, what a shame when you had everything sorted too! I hope you’re feeling OK and can do some of the challenge as per your Plan B. I admire you for taking it so well and even stating that there’s always a reason why these sorts of things happen. Take it easy and I wish you well. #mlstl

I’m so sorry to hear about your “fall” Jennifer. Maybe it’s the universe telling you to slow down a little, or maybe it was just bad luck. Either way, I hope you use the time for a little bit of rest and being kind to your body while it heals. Sometimes we have to be brought up short to re-evaluate our plans – and it’s good that you’ve figured out some Plan B’s.
Thanks for linking up with us at MLSTL and I’ve shared on my SM 🙂

I have a meme that says “if Plan A doesn’t work, don’t worry – there are 25 more letters in the alphabet!”
Good luck on the healing though, and speedy recovery! #mlstl

Oh my : the “fall” word is an F words as we age isn’t it?

Suddenly we are in a category of risk.

I am sorry you have hurt yourself. And from what my husband tells me broken ribs really do hurt.

I like that you can take the occasion and wonder about its lesson. What I know is the lesson often presents itself later. As you are finding, making Plan B.

    Thanks for sharing. Denyse #mlstl
