What Are You Getting Fit For?

September 8, 2020 By nextphaseinfitness 8 Comments

As I was choosing a You Tube video for my early morning gym session, I came across a Les Mills Body Balance class that was created specially for people who were in lockdown. The instructor  asked “What are you getting fit for?” She asked people to post their answer on Social Media, tagging it #iamgettingfitfor…………? This had me thinking. What am I getting fit for? I’m sure many of us spend possibly hours each week, doing fitness activities such as gym, walking, cycling, swimming and much more, but do we ever ask ourselves why we do it. Most of us are probably doing it because we know it’s beneficial for our health. I gave the question some thought, and soon had a list. There is no particular order of importance. Each reason is equally important to me.

 I’m getting fit for….

  •  My mental Health
  •  My physical health
  •  Enjoyment of retirement.
  •  My dog Oscar – he loves his walk.
  •  To be able to keep up with my grandchildren
  •  So my son and daughter don’t have to deal with grief of losing their mother
  •  My large garden which takes many hours of hard work each week to maintain
  •  To continue cycling into my retirement years
  •  To keep my dodgy knee and my injured back in a healthy condition.
  •  Decrease risk of dementia

Seeing the above reasons in black and white, confirm that the time I spend exercising, is time well spent.

Why do you exercise? Have you ever given any thought to the question? I’d love to hear your thoughts, and promise to reply to all comments.

Hi Jen – I hadn’t given it a lot of thought – and I know my fitness level is laughable compared to yours and some of the other bloggers! But…..I still stay fit enough to enjoy a good walk, to play with my grandgirls, and to keep my weight under control (so my clothes still fit!) That’s enough for me and it still reminds me how important it is to “move it or lose it”.

Fitness means different things to all of us Leanne. Your ‘move it or lose it’ attitude is perfect

Thanks Deb but I’m just trying to keep moving so I don’t lose it.

This made me think…and that’s a good thing. My quick answer is so I can do another long distance hike, but enjoy it. My core answer though is so I can be fit and healthy enough to say yes when opportunities come my way.

I love this Jennifer…both the insight into your reasons and the inspiration to look a little closer at my own “why.” When I was younger, I admit it was all about appearances…wanting to look good…but that often led to frustration that the results weren’t what I was hoping for. As I’ve matured, my reasons for fitness have matured as well into reasons that serve me better. I am getting fit so I can maintain independence into old age, so I can enjoy more of what life has to offer, so I can be around for my children and grandchildren and not put a burden on them to care for me sooner than is necessary. More immediately, I am getting fit, so that I feel good now, both physically and mentally. Thank you for the inspiration…as always!
